About Us
Senior Advocate was established in 2005 by Stephanie Smith of Williamsburg, Virginia. Smith’s experience in caring for her grandmother after she developed Alzheimer’s disease sparked her interest in issues involving the needs of older adults. Her hands-on experience as a geriatric care manager with seniors and their families made her aware that they were often ill-informed about resources available to help them. She also became aware that even the professionals who were providing services to seniors were frequently in need of additional information and options. Senior Advocate is committed to meeting those needs through the following avenues:
- Senior Advocate Resource Guide: Our semiannual publications give you information about a variety of housing options, home care, and many other professional services that cater to seniors. The printed versions of the Resource Guides are updated in January and July. They are available through our advertisers, sponsors, and many grocery stores throughout the Peninsula, Middle Peninsula, Northern Neck and Central Virginia. In 2011, the Resource Guides will have a circulation of 130,000.
- Senior Advocate Online: Our website features the same information found in the printed versions of the Senior Advocate Resource Guides and more. Our presence on the Internet gives us the opportunity to update information about providers as we get it and allows us to post additional educational materials that are of interest to seniors, caregivers, and professional service providers. The website also contains a calendar of upcoming events designed to serve the needs of everyone interested in issues of aging. Professionals can use the website as an educational tool and also as a source for information about employment opportunities in the senior health care field.
- Senior Advocate Network Group: Our Senior Advocate Network Groups (SANG) is designed for professionals involved in the senior health care industry. SANG participants meet monthly to network with one another and listen to cutting edge speakers discussing current senior issues. Meetings are held at various locations in our service regions to give as many professionals as possible a chance to participate.
- Senior Advocate Go to Guide: These semi-annual publications, updated March and October of each year, was created specifically for professionals to get a quick glance at select senior service providers in their area. They also include valuable exclusive discounts that are only available through the Go to Guide.
