Hello and welcome to Delia's Corner! This is my forum for talking about all things professional, personal and positive!

For the past few years I knew I was drawing closer to realizing my dream of serving the senior community in a greater and more personal way. That dream became a reality in June when I joined Stephanie Smith and Senior Advocate. After six great years with Sentara Enterprises, I am embarking on this new adventure with you. Stephanie is creating a much-needed publication for Central Virginia and is entrusting me with our Peninsula Guide. As her VP of Marketing, it will be my responsibility to respond to your needs for the 2011, first ever, semi-annual publication!

I am also extremely excited to announce our partnership with the Peninsula Agency on Aging and Bay Aging to produce our next Senior Advocate Resource Guide, which will be published this December. Both Area Agencies on Aging will be working with us to provide invaluable educational articles and once printed, they will also be helping us get it into the hands of those consumers needing senior services. If you are a private or non-profit organization providing services on the Peninsula, Middle Peninsula or Northern Neck, you should have received your Marketing Kit this week.

Thank you to those who participated in our July SANG (Senior Advocate Network Group) meeting last week - we had over 70 senior health care professionals and enjoyed Sentara Hospital Administrator Bob Grave's presentation about trends in senior health care. Our next meeting is August 11 at The Chamberlin with CEAGH's Rick Jackson presenting, "The Latest in Senior Health Care Research."  RSVP to me at delia@senioradvocateonline.com.

I hear through the grapevine that we have some new teammates in our industry and long time friends in new roles. Ron Thompson is the new Admission/Marketing Coordinator for Commonwealth Assisted Living at Hampton and Eden Court.  You can reach him at 757-353-0351 or rathompson@commonwealthal.com. Lisa Gibson, formerly Executive Director of the Historic Triangle Senior Center, has joined the Colonial CASA as their Executive Director. Colonial CASA helps abused and neglected children by advocating for them and finding them placement.  You can reach her at 757-229-3306 or lisa@colonialcasa.org.

Mike Kuhns will be the new VP of the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce after functioning as their VP of Business Development. Congratulations to all on their new positions!

As many of my friends who attend SANG know, I usually tell a “Zackism” during my introduction. Zack is my son, now 10 and no less precocious, verbose, and as challenging then he was 5 years ago when we started meeting. Recently Zack was invited to a library program where they were reading and viewing the plight of the Manatee in Florida. Apparently I am now $25 lighter and the proud Mama of an adopted Manatee who has been given my name. You know I wouldn’t mind seeing a cheetah, zebra, lynx, even an elephant named after me – but a Manatee? Have you seen those guys? They are endangered and they say it’s due to speedboats – I think its appetite…note to self, “call Curves in the morning and join!” By the way the library gave out form letters for the kids to sign and mail to Florida’s governor. Zack wouldn’t sign as he felt if he was going to address the Governor it needed to be in his own words and directly to the person he feels can orchestrate change. I hope that politician has someone fielding his mail.

Until next time.........Delia

P.S. If you come to the next SANG at the Chamberlin on Wednesday, August 11th at 8:30 AM, I’ll share with you a copy of Zack’s letter to the Governor.
