Looking for somewhere to spend an afternoon this summer, away from the heat and humidity?

In June the Williamsburg Regional Library’s Thursday Afternoon Film Series goes cruising with films set on board luxury passenger ships. The films are shown at 2 p.m. each Thursday in the Williamsburg Library Theatre, 515 Scotland St. They are free of charge and don’t require tickets or reservations.

June 3 – Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) In this campy musical Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell are voluptuous delights as gold diggers prowling for wealthy husbands on a cruise ship bound for France. This film, from director Howard Hawks, is quintessential Marilyn and includes her signature number “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend.” NOTE: Pay attention to the cruise ship sets, which were reused in next week’s film, “Dangerous Crossing.”

June 10 – Double Feature Dangerous Crossing (1953) AND Charlie Chan’s Murder Cruise (1940, beginning at 3:30) Dangerous Crossing – A well-done and highly suspenseful B-movie about an overwrought bride (Jeanne Crain) searching a fog-shrouded luxury liner for her husband who has mysteriously disappeared. Charlie Chan’s Murder Cruise – Inspector Charlie Chan (Sidney Toler) hunts a clever killer who is strangling people on board a ship bound from Honolulu to San Francisco. The diverting supporting cast includes Leo G. Carroll, Cora Witherspoon and No.1 son, Victor Sen Young.

June 17 – The Lady Eve (1941) Barbara Stanwyck is beguiling as a shipboard con artist who falls for the gullible, wealthy guy (Henry Fonda) she intended to fleece in this well regarded screwball comedy from writer/director Preston Sturges. Costars include Charles Coburn, Eugene Pallette and William Demarest.

June 24 – The Last Voyage (1960) When the boiler of a luxury liner explodes at sea the crew strives valiantly to save the sinking ship and one passenger works desperately to free his wife who is trapped under rubble. This taut and engrossing drama stars Robert Stack, Dorothy Malone, George Saunders and Woody Strode.
